Published August 2007 www.thecancerbook.com San Dimas, CA (Month, year) Organizations designated to disseminate accurate information about cancer actually spread most of the modern myths surrounding this disease, says Bill Sardi, author of the book You Don’t Have To Be Afraid Of Cancer Anymore. Cancer information bureaus claim cancer is not contagious, surgery doesn’t spread cancer, sugar doesn’t make cancer grow faster, hair dye doesn’t cause cancer, and use of sunscreen lotion prevents skin cancer. “All of these are falsehoods,” says Sardi. Cancer is contagious “Cancer certainly is indirectly contagious,” says Sardi. Up to 15% of cancers are caused by germs, says Sardi, who says a whole book documents that fact. [Microbes and Malignancy, Oxford University Press, 1999] Lymphomas, sarcoma, gastric carcinoma, liver and cervical cancer all emanate from viral or bacterial infection, says Sardi. Examples are oral, throat and cervical cancers which are caused by the Human papilloma virus and gastric cancer which is unequivocally caused by the bacterium Helicobacter pylori. Furthermore, masses caused by Mycobacteria tuberculosis are indistinguishable from cancer. TB may be a major cause of cancer. [Quarterly Journal Medicine 100(1):59, 2007; European J Gynaecology Oncology 24(6):561-2, 2003; Acta Neurochir (Wien). 145(6):513-7, 2003; Diagnostic Cytopathology 28(2):107-9, 2003] Does surgery cause cancer to spread? A survey indicates 41% of Americans believe surgery can cause cancer to spread. Cancer agencies say that is fiction. A physician spokesperson for the American Cancer Society says this myth “really keeps patients from potentially receiving what could be a definitive, if not curative, surgery.” But surgery is not a cure for cancer, and there is published evidence surgery does indeed facilitate the spread of tumors. Researchers at Harvard Medical School clearly state that “surgical wounding associated with the removal of experimental primary cancers can trigger angiogenesis (new blood vessels) in previously dormant micro-metastatic tumor deposits, which can result in the acceleration of relapse and death.” [Lancet 357: 1048, 2001] It is said that surgery “kick starts” hidden small tumors. Surgeons know this and often prescribe pre-operative chemotherapy, or anti-estrogen drugs, to limit the effect surgery has upon accelerated growth of remaining small tumors following surgery. [Lancet 347: 260, 1996] In a report entitled “Excisional surgery for cancer sure: therapy at a cost,” researchers indicate there is “strong” evidence that tumor removal influences the growth of remaining tumors. [Lancet 4: 760-68, 2003] A report in Medical Hypotheses states that “surgery can increase the number of circulating tumor cells and induce an immunosuppressive effect that might facilitate metastatic spread. The process of wound healing can stimulate growth factors that have been shown to accelerate tumor cell growth. This situation is a double-edged sword.” [Medical Hypotheses 67: 1054-59, 2006] Researchers in Ireland report that surgical removal of a primary tumor is often followed by a faster and more aggressive tumor at the same site. [Annals Thoracic Surgery 80: 1046-50, 2005] Even a simple biopsy is invasive enough to activate the wound-healing process and accelerate tumor progression. [Lancet 357: 1048, 2001] Finally, Georgetown University doctors report that surgery carries an increased risk for cancer weeks or even years after an operation. [Anesthesiology Clinics North America, June 2006] Hair dye and cancer The American Cancer Society says hair dyes don’t cause cancer. But this so-called myth persists. After examining 79 different studies, a report published in the Journal of the American Medical Association says “We did not find strong evidence of a marked increase in the risk of cancer among personal hair dye users.” [Journal American Medical Assn 293: 2516-25, 2005] However, a study conducted by researcher at the University of North Carolina School of Public Health found that the use of any hair dye in the month before and/or during pregnancy is associated with a modest increased risk of neuroblastoma in offspring. [Cancer Causes Controls 16: 743-48, 2005] Neuroblastoma is a tumor containing embryonic nerve cells. When data was pooled from different population studies, it was found that “personal use of hair dye products increases bladder cancer risk by 22% to 50%.” [Public Health Reports 120: 31-38, 2005] A recent study shows that the use of hair dyes is associated with adult acute leukemia and that more frequent use and long-term use increased the risks for this type of cancer. Non-permanent hair dyes were not associated with leukemia, but long duration of permanent hair dye “may have an impact on the risk of leukemia.” [American Journal Epidemiology 160: 19-25, 2004] Another study could not completely dismiss data linking hair dye use with a modest increased risk for bladder cancer. [International Journal Cancer 109: 581-86, 2004] It’s possible the hair care industry knows why hair dye is linked with cancer since a recent study shows that the increased risk for Hodgkin’s lymphoma was only found among women who started using hair coloring products prior to 1980. [American Journal Epidemiology 159: 148-54, 2004] It’s possible some carcinogens have been removed from currently made products. The data is not clear enough to say no to the idea that hair dye may increase cancer risk, even if only by a modest degree. Does sugar promote cancer growth? According to the American Cancer Society, sugar doesn’t make cancer grow faster. Dr. John T. Ely of the University of Washington decided to test whether sugar abets tumor growth. Dr. Ely found that patients in remission from tumors have lower blood sugar levels. [Integrative Cancer Therapy 4: 25-31, 2005] Dr. Ely and colleagues went on to conduct an animal test. Mice were placed on three different diets designed to produce different blood sugar levels and then injected with highly aggressive breast tumor cells. Seventy days later 16 of 24 mice on a high sugar diet had succumbed to cancer, 8 of 24 mice on a normal sugar diet died and only 1 of 20 mice on a low-sugar diet died. [Biochemistry Biophysical Research Communications 132: 1174-79, 1985] Dr. Ely has taken breast cancer patients, placed them on a low sugar diet, added supplemental vitamin C and treated their tumors with radiation, and demonstrated a prolonged survival. [Integrative Cancer Therapy 4: 25-31, 2005] Does sunscreen use prevent skin cancer? When Americans were surveyed, 43% said that sunscreen use can prevent skin cancer. The ACS says: “The use of sunscreen on a daily basis is a good practice for reducing skin cancer risk.” Yet, when researchers scrutinized the issue of whether sunscreen use prevents skin cancer, they found that there is no association between sunscreen use and the development of malignant melanoma, the most feared form of skin cancer. [British Journal Dermatology 153: 378-81, 2005] When researchers analyzed data from many studies they concluded that “the melanoma protective potential of sunscreens cannot be proven using the existing evidence.” [Photodermatology Photoimmunology Photomedicine 18: 153-56, 2002] The big shocker is that 95% of solar radiation is UV-A energy, while most sunscreens protect from the harsher UV-B rays. UV-A may also induce skin cancer. [Journal Investigative Dermatology 121:869-75, 2003] The latest study shows that UV-B rays only partially contribute to the development of melanoma. UV-A is also involved. [Journal of the National Cancer Institute, Vol. 97: 1822-1831, December 21, 2005] SPF (sun protection factor) refers to the ability of a product to block out UV-B rays. So there is a flaw in the design of the sunscreen products themselves. [Postgraduate Medicine 116: July 2004] Melanoma was rare up until the 1950s when sunscreen use began as “tanning lotions.” Now there are over 40,000 cases of melanoma and 7,000 deaths from melanoma reported annually. Rising trends in the incidence of and mortality from melanoma began in the 1970s and 1980s, when sunscreens with high sun protection factors were more widely used. [Annals Epidemiology 3: 103-10, 1993] Blockage of UV-B sun rays by sunscreen lotion inhibits production of vitamin D in the skin. [American Journal Clinical Nutrition 80: 1678-88S, 2004] According to a recent report, frequent regular sun exposure acts to cause cancers that have a 0.3% death rate with 2,000 U.S. fatalities per year and acts to prevent cancers that have death rates from 20-65% with 138,000 U.S. fatalities per year. [Preventive Medicine 22: 132-40, 1993]: A recent study estimates that 50,000-63,000 individuals in the United States and 19,000-25,000 in Britain die prematurely from cancer annually due to insufficient vitamin D. [Photochemistry Photobiology 81: 1276-86, 2005] For more information about myths that surround cancer read the new book You Don’t Have To Be Afraid Of Cancer Anymore, offered at www.thecancerbook.com Are Cancer Cures Being Hidden From the Public? by Bill Sardiposted at LewRockwell.com October 1, 2007 According to a 2005 poll reported by the American Cancer Society, 27% of Americans agree with the statement: "There is currently a cure for cancer but the medical industry won't tell the public." Another 14 percent are uncertain. Denials from cancer authorities were swift after release of the poll results. The search for alternative cures for cancer wouldn’t be necessary except that modern medicine has no effective treatments for this frightful disease more than 30 years after the war on cancer was launched. A recent study shows chemotherapy only contributes to the 5-year survival of 2.3% of cancer cases. Another recent study shows cancer treatments reduce the size of tumors but spawn the development of cancer stem cells that counters the effect of treatment. On the day a person is diagnosed with cancer, 50% of cases have already spread beyond their site of origin, which is called metastasis, the mortal form of the disease. There is no effective treatment for metastasis. Furthermore, of the remaining 50% of cases, 70–90% of these are solid tumors, mostly of the breast, prostate, lung or colon, that chemo and radiation cannot penetrate. Inevitably tumor resistance sets in, which renders chemotherapy useless and leaves the patient with a weakened immune system. So cancer patients had better start a search for alternative therapies soon after diagnosis. Seek alternatives Recognizing these facts, I set out to write a book that would be helpful to cancer patients or anybody who wants to prevent cancer or its recurrence. This resulted in the recent publication of a 550-page reference book entitled You Don’t Have To Be Afraid Of Cancer Anymore. By my examination, there are at least 11 scientifically valid cures for cancer that modern medicine simply disregards, among them are: (a) Folic acid and vitamin C to prevent or treat cervical cancer caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (in lieu of the unproven but widely promoted HPV vaccine that is not likely to save one woman’s life because it does not protect against all strains of the virus). (b) Intravenous vitamin C – cancer researchers are just now coming around to the idea I.V. vitamin C can create transiently toxic levels of hydrogen peroxide that selectively kills cancer cells without harming healthy cells. Three cases of total remission from cancer have now been fully documented following I.V. vitamin C. This validates the work of Dr. Linus Pauling and Dr. Ewan Cameron in the 1970s. (3) The fact that all cancer patients have thick blood which facilitates the spread of cancer (metastasis), which is the mortal form of cancer. Therefore blood thinning agents (like vitamin E, fish oil, magnesium, garlic) may prevent this problem. What is being hidden from view? Yet another "cancer cure" that has recently gained public attention causes one to question if something isn’t being hidden from public view, and it may be the greatest cancer discovery of all time. The story begins in 1999 in a laboratory at Wake Forest University Medical School where, in an experiment, researcher Zheng Cui attempted to obtain cancer antigens by injecting fast-growing sarcoma cancer cells into mice. The mice received an injection of 200,000 tumor cells. Unexpectedly, one mouse survived. Then 400,000 cancer cells were injected into this mouse. Again, there was no effect. Totally cancer-proof mouse Eventually, 500 million, then 1 billion and finally 3 billion cancer cells were injected, but the mouse survived. It was astonishing – a totally cancer-resistant mouse. This discovery received widespread attention in the news media in 2003 when it was first reported to the public. Eventually, as documented in published reports in 2003 and 2005, this male mouse sired 800 offspring that were also totally cancer resistant. And a subsequent experiment showed that the immunity these animals exhibited against cancer could be transferred via infusion of white blood cells into other animals with cancer, also with complete disappearance of their tumors! It was stated that this gene-transferred immunity against cancer was probably passed on to offspring from a single gene. Since humans and mice share 98% of the same genes, there is hope that a parallel gene could be found in humans that would confer complete immunity against cancer. But no gene array studies have commenced, or if they have, they are being kept in a laboratory closet. At the time, researchers said there would be vigilant pursuit to find the gene, but, so far, nothing. From animal lab to humans Then unexpectedly, Dr. Cui revealed this September that his research had moved from the animal lab to humans. In an informal and unpublished study, he obtained white blood cells from volunteers and placed them in lab dishes filled with tumor cells. Some people’s white blood cells killed only 2% of the cancer cells in the lab dish. They represented a small number of people with poor immunity against cancer. The vast majority of people exhibited marginal cancer-cell killing activity. But in a very few people, their white blood cells killed up to 97% of the cancer cells in the lab dish and therefore exhibited the same cancer-cell killing immunity as the cancer-proof mice! Off track news headlines While these figures were initially published in the September 27 issue of New Scientist and subsequently by other news agencies, the fact that some "cancer-proof" humans exist was not headlined. It should have been one of the greatest news headlines ever. What news reporters focused on was the approval granted by the Food & Drug Administration for Wake Forest University researchers to infuse white blood cells from cancer resistant humans into patients who are battling cancer. In the New Scientist report, Dr. Cui explained that his human investigation found other controlling factors in humans. Immunity against cancer declined with advancing age, and emotional stress appears to totally abolish it. Furthermore, the season of the year completely controls it. No cancer-resistant blood samples from humans were obtained during winter months. Super immunity and vitamin D This last revelation strongly points to vitamin D, the sunshine hormone that is produced in human skin upon exposure to the sun’s fast-tanning UV-B rays, or that can be purchased as a vitamin pill in pharmacies and health shops. Vitamin D levels are higher in summer than winter. A recent corroborative study, the first of its kind, found that 1100 international units of vitamin D3, taken as a dietary supplement for 4 years, reduced the risk for all types of cancer by 60-77% among women in Nebraska. It is also known that cancer rates are much higher in less sunny geographical areas above 40 degrees North latitude. In fact, survival rates are higher if cancer is diagnosed in the summer. The Wake Forest University researchers made brief mention of vitamin D, but then the news headlines featured the approval of the white blood cell human infusion study that will have to wait till next summer to commence because of the seasonal variance. The vitamin D connection was swept under the rug. Not new and not without side effects Infusing white blood cells, or agents that stimulate the same, is not new. In one recently published study, leukemia patients received infusions of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, a hormone that stimulates production of white blood cells. Of 20 leukemia patients treated, 8 patients survived in complete remission for a period of 3 years. These were end-stage leukemia cases that had failed stem-cell therapy. [Haematologica 92 (3):414–7, March 2007] However, infusion of white blood cells from donors into other humans can result in a life-threatening host-graft reaction. In a recent study conducted in France, researchers found life-threatening host-graft reactions emanating from infusion of progenitor cells (similar to stem cells) are provoked by the number of white-blood cells in the infusion. [Transfusion 47 (7): 1268–75, 2007] Wake Forest University researchers say they will attempt to minimize the possibility of these reactions. However, one wonders if this study is being designed to fail. Will the treatment be worse than the disease? Why have university researchers turned their backs on vitamin D? Maybe researchers’ hands are being tied. What now? There is much the public is not being told here. There are ways to switch genes on molecularly. Nutrients can do this as well as drugs. Where is the gene in humans that exerts complete protection from cancer and which molecules activate this gene? Apparently, one of them is vitamin D. There are also ways, using dietary supplements, to "weaponize" vitamin D so its cancer-cell killing capacity is many times greater. Wake Forest University researchers say they found some people have 100 times greater immunity against cancer than others. A special 30-page report entitled "Cancer-Proof Humans" has been written and will now accompany all orders for the book You Don't Have To Be Afraid Of Cancer Anymore. The report reveals what cancer researchers are hiding – that there are ways to produce "super immunity" from cancer. To find out more, visit thecancerbook.com Cancer Coverup The Promise Of A Cancer Cure (In Two Years), But A Larger Discovery Goes Unreported By Bill Sardi Author of the newly published book "You Don't Have To Be Afraid Of Cancer Anymore www.thecancerbook.com. News headlines encircle the globe --- researchers will launch a so-called new and promising type of cancer-cell killing immune trial next summer. The news story originates from a discovery, announced in 2003, that Wake Forest University researchers discovered a laboratory mouse that was totally cancer resistant. A follow-up study showed that white-blood cells from "cancer-proof" mice could be infused into mice with cancer and produce complete eradication of their tumors. Now a human trial looms to see if it will produce the same result. But there is much more to this story -- many questions remain unanswered (and un-asked), and there is puzzlement over misdirected science. Beginning in 2003 when Wake Forest researchers announced the discovery of a cancer-proof mouse, there was something odd about their report. The tumor-resistant mouse was discovered in 1999, but the discovery wasn't reported till 4 years later. Why the delay in airing such a remarkable discovery? Then later, researchers reported they had bred around 800 mice that carry the same cancer-cell killing immunity as their ancestor, meaning this trait is genetically transferred to offspring, probably by a single gene. Since humans and mice share 98% of the same genes, there was hope that a parallel gene could be found in humans that would confer immunity against cancer. But no gene array studies have commenced, or if they have, they are being kept in a laboratory closet. At the time, researchers said there would be vigilant pursuit to find the gene. But so far, nothing. The bigger story Then researchers conducted an informal study of 100 human volunteers. They made a startling discovery that, so far, has been downplayed. Some people exhibit weak immunity against cancer, while the vast majority have average immunity. But a very small number of people exhibit the same vigorous ability to kill cancer cells as the cancer-proof mice in the laboratory. White blood cells taken from some participants killed close to 97 per cent of the cancer cells in 24 hours, while samples from others killed only two per cent. Cancer-proof humans exist!! Why this discovery isn't making headline news across the globe goes unexplained. The major news story, and scientific discovery, is being buried. Controlling factors Furthermore, researchers also found that this unusual immunity is diminished by advancing age, abolished by stress and is controlled by the seasons --- cancer-cell killing peaks in summer months and wanes in winter. This means immunity against cancer is modifiable. Investigators point to the strong possibility that vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin, may heighten human immunity. Researchers plan to infuse cancer-killing cells from donors into cancer patients, but the experiment has to wait till next summer because nobody seems to have any cancer-killing during the winter months. This is when vitamin D levels are lowest. Led astray A recent study corroborates the vitamin D theory of cancer. Women in Nebraska who took 1100 International Units of supplemental vitamin D3 for 4 years experienced a 60-77% decline in cancer risk. Furthermore, it has been known for decades that cancer rates are lowest near the Equator where solar UV radiation is most intense. An hour of total-body sun exposure at noontime in the summer in Arizona will produce up to 10,000 units of vitamin D. The liver stores vitamin D for future use. But the research is directed away from vitamin D towards risky treatment, not finding the gene that would confer to humans complete immunity from cancer, nor further exploration into how vitamin D therapy might work to treat or prevent cancer. Infusion therapy What cancer researchers want to do is infuse granulocytes from healthy donors into cancer patients. Granulocytes are a type of white blood cell filled with microscopic granules that secrete enzymes that literally digest invading tumor or germs cells.
But this type of therapeutic infusion of granulocytes is not new. It is performed after cancer chemotherapy to reduce the number of infections following treatment. Life threatening However, granulocyte infusion can also induce a life-threatening host-graft reaction. Innate immunity Wake Forest University researchers previously identified white blood cells that comprise the innate immune system as the chief cancer cell killers. These are neutrophils, natural killer cells and macrophages. They identify, seek out and destroy cancer cells by creating a burst of free radicals inside the tumor cell. Neutrophils are particularly powerful because they not only circulate in the blood like macrophages and natural killer cells, but they move into tissues, like solid tumors. Neutrophils also play a role in activating the adaptive immune system, which are comprised of T cells and B cells.
Granulocytes shown next to a red blood cell (erythrocyte) There is much the public is not being told here. There are ways to switch genes on molecularly. Nutrients can do this as well as drugs. Where is the gene in humans that exerts complete protection from cancer and which molecules activate this gene? Apparently, one of them is vitamin D. There are also ways, using dietary supplements, to 'weaponize' vitamin D so its cancer-cell killing capacity is many times greater. Wake Forest University researchers say they found some people have 100 times greater immunity against cancer than others. War On Cancer Has Been Won. War Now Is Against Cancer Care Industry San Dimas, CA (September 18, 2007) – Citing recent scientific studies which show vitamins, mineral chelators and various herbal extracts are far more capable of curing or preventing cancer than currently available anti-cancer drugs, health journalist Bill Sardi, author of the new book “You Don’t Have To Be Afraid Of Cancer Anymore,” declares the decades-long war on cancer has largely been won. “The problem now is getting the entrenched cancer care industry to lead patients to these discoveries,” he says. “When researcher Larry Clark published a report in 1994 that a selenium trace mineral supplement significantly reduced the risk for many types of cancer, the report was received with disbelief,” says Sardi, “even though it was the type of report that skeptics like to see, long-term, controlled, prospective, with subjects and investigators blinded from knowing which people were given the supplement.” When researchers at Creighton University recently announced a vitamin D supplement decreased the risk for most forms of cancer by 60-77%, health authorities were quick to advise the public not to begin supplementation, even though there is no conceivable harm and little cost involved, says Sardi. The Canadian Cancer Society recommended the public begin immediate dietary supplementation. American health authorities have yet to make such a recommendation. Sardi says the vitamin D/cancer discovery is corroborated by geographical studies showing cancer rates are the lowest near the Equator where vitamin D levels are higher due to the intensity of solar ultraviolet radiation. For decades health authorities have dismissed the link between vitamin D deficiency and cancer. They can no longer deny this now, says Sardi. Few cancer doctors (oncologists) prescribe selenium or vitamin D, even though there are 10- million cancer patients living in the U.S. that are prone to recurrence. Sardi says it is strange that modern medicine cannot come up with effective measures to prevent cancer aside from smoking cessation programs and use of sunscreens. The National Cancer Institute’s 5-A-Day program to consume more fruits and vegetables failed to reduce cancer mortality rates, and even the current 9-13 servings recommendation is unproven, says Sardi. The cervical cancer/human papilloma virus vaccine, promoted to young ladies, is unlikely to prevent one case of cervical cancer, says Sardi. The immunity it produces may wear off decades later when cervical cancer occurs and the vaccine only protects against two of the 18 strains of the virus. “But doctors completely overlook evidence that sufficient levels of vitamins completely vanquish this virus,” says Sardi. “There are many proven ways to treat and prevent cancer that go unutilized,” says Sardi. “These are not alternative therapies but should be considered mainstream natural medicines,” he emphasizes. Sardi points to the campaign to use sunscreen lotions as a major misdirection that has actually raised the risk for malignant melanoma, a mortal form of skin cancer, as well as other types of cancer. Mortal malignant melanoma was less common until 1971 when sunscreen agents began to be widely promoted. Only recently have researchers shown that sunscreen lotions block the fast-tanning UV-B rays that produce vitamin D while allowing the deeper penetrating UV-A rays to reach the skin. “This not only increased the risk for melanoma, but for all types of cancer,” says Sardi. “The practice of applying sunscreen lotion is feeding the cancer care industry with a steady stream of customers,” he says. About 7000 Americans succumb to malignant melanoma annually. Citing evidence that chemotherapy only contributes to the 5-year survival of cancer patients in 2% of cases, his new book suggests newly-diagnosed cancer patients seek alternatives early on, but not the many marginal or disproven therapies offered by alternative medicine. “Nutritional medicine has the most to offer the public in regards to cancer prevention or treatment,” says Sardi. San Dimas, CA (PRWEB) September 17, 2007 -- The fear of cancer largely goes unmentioned in modern medicine. While fear of cancer is as real as cancer itself, there are few scientific studies that even address fear.
Fear emanates from uncertainty, lack of control and lack of information, says health journalist Bill Sardi. “Cancer patients need a game plan, preferably before their doctor diagnoses cancer. They need to know what causes cancer (a topic that is rarely addressed), and they need to know the typical overall survival for their stage of cancer, not just the treatment-related survival. This is because treatment can lead to mortal consequences that must be considered in survival data evaluated by the patient,” he says. Recently a real-time survey of males who were just diagnosed with prostate cancer was conducted. While most of these men had a form of prostate cancer that will not threaten their life, and treatment would likely be ineffective or even spread cancer cells to other organs in their body, fear overcame these men. With sweat on their brows and tight-clenched knuckles, they demanded immediate treatment. Studies show men who delay treatment decisions and investigate all their options are far less likely to undergo treatment, says Sardi. Often there is no rush to make decisions about treatment says Sardi, who quotes a study that showed survival was far better among patients whose cancer diagnosis and treatment was delayed by a few months. Generally, cancer patients feel vulnerable because most of the time doctors are doing all the work and the patient participates passively, taking pain pills or anti-nausea/diarrheal medication as their only involvement. Frequently doctors make no recommendations to alter the diet, limit sugar or iron intake that are growth factors for cancer, or even to stop smoking. In one study, only 12 of the 50 cancer patients received a recommendation from their doctor that they quit smoking or change their diet. This was striking given the fact that 68% of these patients had dietary-related cancer (colon). [Preventive Medicine 25: 162-69, 1996 Yet surprisingly, the National Cancer Institute’s recommendation to consume 5 servings of fruits and vegetables every day has been a failure. It should not be relied upon for prevention or treatment. Many patients can avoid being blindsided by a cancer diagnosis, says Sardi. “They should anticipate such a diagnosis if they are a smoker, and in particular if they are of advanced age. Despite prevalent concerns over environmental carcinogens, even tobacco and alcohol use, advanced age is the most prominent factor involved in the onset of cancer. The prevalence of cancer rises greatly after age 50.” It’s striking to realize that cancer patients often elect to undergo treatment their own doctors would refuse. The accompanying chart shows that a much smaller number of health professionals would elect to undergo mild chemotherapy than their patients.
Attitudes Toward Mild Chemotherapy (Source: Chest 109: 80S, 1996) With 1% cure rate | With 3 month survival increase | With symptom relief
With advanced age being the primary risk factor for cancer, the best thing that senior adults can do is reinvigorate their immune system and reduce iron stores that fuel the growth of cancer cells, says Sardi.
